Museums for All is an initiative that allows individuals and families receiving food assistance (SNAP EBT – Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Electronic Benefit Transfer) to gain free or reduced admission to over 1,200 museums across the United States.
The Museums for All program has an impressive impact by opening doors to cultural experiences for many who might otherwise not have the opportunity to explore museums, botanical gardens, and arboretums. Everyone deserves access to nature, art, history, and science, and Museums for All plays a crucial role in making that happen.
Fostering Life-Long Connections with Nature and Culture
Botanical gardens and arboretums are havens for nature lovers, offering vibrant displays of flora, serene landscapes, and a chance to connect with the natural world. But for many, the cost of admission can be a barrier, limiting access to these enriching spaces. The Museums for All EBT program bridges this gap, offering free or reduced entry to EBT cardholders, opening doors to a world of botanical wonder.
Why Botanical Gardens Are a Perfect Fit for Museums for All
Botanical gardens and arboretums are natural fits for the Museums for All program. They offer:
Educational experiences: From guided tours and interactive exhibits to plant identification workshops and children’s programs, botanical gardens are hubs of informal learning, fostering curiosity about the natural world and environmental stewardship.
Family-friendly spaces: With ample room to roam, explore, and picnic, these gardens provide a welcome respite for families, especially those living in urban areas with limited green spaces.
Mental and physical well-being: Studies have shown that immersion in nature reduces stress, improves mood, and even boosts the immune system. For low-income families facing challenges, these benefits are invaluable.
Beyond Blooms: The Impact of Museum for All
By participating in Museums 4 All, botanical gardens and arboretums make a real difference. They are:
Promoting inclusion: By removing financial barriers, they ensure everyone can experience the beauty and wonder of nature, regardless of income.
Building lifelong connections: Early exposure to nature can spark a lifelong love for the environment, inspiring future generations to become stewards of the planet.
Strengthening communities: Botanical gardens become gathering places where people from diverse backgrounds can connect, learn, and grow together.
How It Works
To find a participating botanical garden, arboretum, or museum near you, go to the Museums For All website to search by museum name or location.
Here are the steps for your visit:
Find a participating museum near you by searching the Museum for All website. Visit any day during regular hours.
Show your EBT Card and ID. Admission is $3 or less, often free, for four people per EBT card. Your SNAP EBT card is for identification purposes only, not for payment. Any admission costs must be paid for with other methods (cash, credit cards, etc.). However, you’ll often find free museums with EBT.
Enjoy! You can go to as many museums and as many times as you like. You can use your SNAP EBT card in other states. If you live in one state but want to visit a participating museum in another state, you can!
The San Diego Botanical Garden participates in the Museums for All EBT program. It is a sample of what to see in botanical gardens and arboretums nationwide. For a List of Participating Gardens, see the table at the end of the post.
Botanical Gardens: Charting a Course to Greener Access
Museums for All broaden a museum’s visitor base and reach underserved communities. A museum visit can inspire the development of new skills and interests, ignite creativity, and enrich social connections. Read a Garden’s mission or vision statement and the fit with Museums 4 All is clear.
Spreading the Seeds: How You Can Help
Perhaps you have benefited from the Museum for All program and are passionate about nature and equitable access. Here are ways you can get involved to pay it forward:
Visit a participating botanical garden or arboretum with your EBT card. Experience the joy firsthand and spread the word to others who might benefit.
Volunteer your time. Share your love for plants and help create welcoming spaces for everyone.

Conclusion
Let’s cultivate a world where nature’s beauty and knowledge are accessible to all. By supporting Museums for All in botanical gardens and arboretums, we’re nurturing a future where everyone can flourish amidst the wonders of the plant world.
We can create a more equitable landscape, one vibrant bloom at a time.
